Northern Ireland and Great Britain

Last updated 2026-10-13.

EmploymentWise covers the Republic of Ireland only. Nothing on this site applies to a job in Northern Ireland or in Great Britain: the Acts, the WRC, the minimum wage, the leave and the time limits are all different there.

Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland has its own employment law, its own Industrial Tribunal and Fair Employment Tribunal, a three-month time limit for most claims, and the Labour Relations Agency for conciliation and advice. The Republic’s six-month WRC limit, its redundancy formula and its sick-pay scheme do not apply.

England, Scotland and Wales

Great Britain has the Employment Rights Act 1996, employment tribunals, Acas early conciliation and a three-month limit. The sister site SettleWise covers settlement agreements and the employee’s side there.

Working across the border

Which law applies depends on where you work and what the contract says, and can be a question for a solicitor in the jurisdiction concerned. For a job in the Republic, start with the guides and the WRC deadline checker.
